Forty Years Of My Hobbies

Looking Ahead – There’s Always Something To Learn

More Projects Than Time Available

As you can see, I’ve got plenty to keep me occupied. The RC car and Insta360 are still waiting for attention, and there’s a guitar to learn. I’m not actively searching for new hobbies, although there’s always the possibility of discovering something else that catches my interest.

For example, I’ve got a pile of stones collected from beaches around Australia tucked away in a cupboard, along with an electric tool for carving and etching them. It could become another hobby one day, but for now it’s firmly in the maybe later category. I can see the stones from where I’m sitting, which is probably enough progress for the moment.

The challenge isn’t finding more things to do. It’s deciding what I want to do first and giving myself time to enjoy it, without feeling obliged to finish everything or turn every interest into an income.

If there’s one message I’d like you to take from this article, it’s that hobbies and learning new things matter at any age.

For younger people, hobbies can provide opportunities to meet others, work together and develop communication, negotiation and anger-management skills. Being part of a club or working on a shared project can teach you plenty about dealing with differences, solving problems and getting along with people. In other words, there’s a fair bit of learning involved in simply practising how to be human.

For those of us who are a little older, hobbies can keep the mind active, provide new challenges and add something enjoyable to everyday life. They don’t have to be ambitious, expensive or particularly productive. Sometimes, it’s enough to find something that interests you and see where it leads.

As for me, I’m looking forward to revisiting some old interests, getting a few unfinished projects moving and discovering what I can do with the time ahead. There’s no grand plan to master everything on the list. I’ll work through it at my own pace and see what happens.

Thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to read about my hobbies and interests.

What do you enjoy doing? Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn but haven’t got around to yet?
If you’ve got any suggestions for the projects I’ve mentioned, please leave a comment below.
