I like a good motivational quote. Yet so many have been used by businesses, translated into Latin, or plastered across T-shirts as though they’re something original and witty.
Sure, I like stoic, masculine, life-inspiring words from Roman and Egyptian times, when men sculpted stone and raised pillars to the gods of their choice. I also like well-written song lyrics from music written since the 1960s. Yet many of the quotes I prefer have unknown authors, or at least haven’t been attributed to any one person.
Here are a few that don’t tend to appear in the usual lists of motivational and inspirational quotes, yet each helps me get through the average day:
- “Trust the timing of your life.”
- “Everything you go through, grows you.”
- “Let your past make you better, not bitter.”
- “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
- “I didn’t come this far to only come this far.”
- “Have the courage to live life the way you want to.”
- “What defines us is how well we rise after falling.”
- “Life is a gift. Wake up every day and realize that.”
- “I trust the next chapter, because I know the author.”
- “It is up to you to see the beauty of everyday things.”
- “Supporting another’s success won’t ever dampen yours.”
- “You get in life what you have the courage to ask for.”
- “In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.”
- “Be happy with what you have while working for what you want.”
- “There’s no time to be bored in a world as beautiful as this.”
- “Stop trying to calm the storm. Calm yourself, the storm will pass.”
- “How to be happy: Decide every morning that you are in a good mood.”
- “Edit your life frequently and ruthlessly. It’s your masterpiece after all.”
- “Life has a funny way of working out just when you start to believe it never will.”
- “It’s a short life. There’s no reason not to go after what sets your soul on fire.”
- “Life is too short to give another minute to anyone or anything that doesn’t make you happy.”
- “The older I get the more I understand that it’s okay to live a life others don’t understand.”
- “What a wonderful thought it is that some of the best days of our lives haven’t happened yet?”
- “It’s okay to be scared. Being scared means you’re about to do something really, really brave.“
- “Attract what you expect. Reflect what you desire. Become what you respect. Mirror what you admire.”
- “Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it.”
- “No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind.”
- “Always leave people better than you found them. Hug the hurt. Kiss the broken. Befriend the lost. Love the lonely.”
- “The waiting. The meantime. The in-between. It all serves a purpose. Trust your process, even the delays and detours.”
- “Stop doubting and stop overthinking. Life is happening right now and you shouldn’t waste it wishing it was different.”
And that’s it. I have my own mantra, created at different times in my life when my mind needed an extra hand to stay focused, held up and on track.
I hope one or more of these might also help you when you need a little encouragement, a different perspective, or simply a reminder that things can get better.
You’re welcome.
