I don’t know what schools teach regarding world wide geography. I do not recall being taught when I was a kid about the rest of the world.
We just accepted that we lived in Australia and a lot of other people did not.
But now that we have Google Maps and Google Earth plus the internet at our finger tips wherever we go, the world is in our back pocket.
What will probably amaze most people is that there is less distance between Russia and Canada than there is between Tasmania and Victoria !
We can see that Hawaii is 13 hours by plane – about the same time by car between Adelaide and Sydney.
And if you see the planet on a true representation of the geographical masses on this round ball of mud we call Earth, nothing is so far away.
The end of the universe is a few hundred lifetimes away. Yet some of us don’t get the chance to see the rest of this planet in one lifetime.
I am heading into my late 40’s, my wife is beginning her 40’s, my first borne son is growing up fast and his sibling is expected early 2015.
So I won’t be seeing the rest of the world any time soon. My wife is trying to convince everyone that we are going to the UK in 2016. UPDATE: It never happened. Instead, we moved to Kangaroo Island. Far different.
Why tell you all this? Because life is too damn short. Do what you can while you can. Be who you want to be, and not necessarily what society expects of you.
One day I want to show my family the world, but not before they realise that family matters most. When everything else is troubling you, your family will be there in every way possible.
Happy faces are smiling faces. Smile often. It scares away the people who think they are sane, yet attracts people who understand that happiness trumps all obstacles.
