Go Where You Wanna Go, Be Who You Wanna Be

When I was a kid we weren’t taught much about the rest of this world. We just accepted that we lived in Australia and a lot of other people did not.

So now that we have Google Maps and Google Earth, plus the internet at our fingertips wherever we go, the world is in our back pocket. So I don’t know what school can teach children about world wide geography in this day and age when they can ‘walk’ around the planet with their fingers!

What will probably amaze most people is that…

  1. There is less distance between Russia and Canada than there is between Tasmania and Victoria !
  2. Hawaii to Adelaide is 13 hours by plane – which is about the same time by car between Adelaide and Sydney.
  3. When you compare the distance between Earth and the Sun — nothing is really that far away.
  4. Whilst the end of the universe is a few hundred lifetimes away, some of us still won’t/don’t get the chance to see much of this planet in one life time.

I am heading into my late 40’s, my wife is beginning her 40’s, my first-son is growing up fast and his sibling is expected early 2015. Which means I won’t be seeing the rest of the world any time soon. Sarah is trying to convince everyone that we are going to the UK in 2016.
UPDATE (mid 2017): It never happened. Instead, we moved to Kangaroo Island. Far different.

Why tell you all this?

Because life is too damn short. Do what you can while you can. Be who you want to be, and not necessarily what society expects of you.

One day I want to show my family the world, but not before they realise that family matters most. When everything else is troubling you, your family will be there in every way possible.

Hopefully.
