In late 2016, our family embarked on an incredible journey to Kangaroo Island. For my wife, it was a homecoming, a return to her roots, plus to manage her honey business.
For me, it was nothing short of a thrilling, grand adventure. Not only was I able to start a small successful business, I realised my creativity had a chance to come alive.
As I have been photographing before we got married in 1998 (and continue to do so when time permits), I really wanted to display and maybe make a few dollars from the many moments, landscapes, and the flora and fauna I captured across the beautiful Kangaroo Island.
I recall the day I strolled into the Kingscote Art Gallery on Murray Street, Kingscote and I realised I could be an artist on those very walls.
Soon enough, I was showcasing and selling my framed and post-card photographs!
I now take my turn behind the gallery counter, every month on a Sunday. Each time I arrive at the gallery, I always whip up quick promotional video with my phone to spotlight the incredible creations of our local artists.
It’s my way of giving back to this vibrant, welcoming community that had become our new home. Initially, I shared these videos on Instagram, but things change and I’ve since said goodbye to my Instagram account. I now upload to YouTube – as the videos below show:
Do keep in mind that many of the products on display have likely found new homes, but the spirit of artistry endures.
