Over the last few months you would have noticed I have been reading and writing and working on a journey to rediscover myself, to rewire my brain, and conquer the anxiety and self-induced stress that have held me captive.
In this pursuit, I stumbled upon The Four Agreements, which have become my guiding light through the labyrinth of life. These principles have provided me with the clarity and strength to navigate the complexities of existence.
The Four Agreements
1. BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using words to speak against yourself or gossip to others. Use the power of your words in the direction of truth and love.
2. DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projections of their own reality, their own dreams. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
3. DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS
Find the courage to ask question and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
4. ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; It will be different when you are healthy as opposed to when you are sick. Under any circumstances, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgement, self-abuse and regret.
These Four Agreements have become my life’s playbook, not just for understanding myself better, but also for fixing all the issues I’ve been dealing with since early 2020.
Additionally they also help guide how I relate to people, and especially my own family. They are helping me understand better and be understood, both trust and be trustworthy, and love and be loved more deeply.
BTW: The Four Agreements were first penned by Don Miguel Ruiz, a Mexican author, in his book titled The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom. “Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, The Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love.“
