It’s not for a national achievement, not for workers’ rights, and not for anything that actually benefits the majority of people – it is for a horse race: Adelaide Cup Day has been a public holiday since 1973. Yet year after year, fewer people seem to care about the event it’s meant to celebrate. So why are we still doing this?
A Public Holiday Without Purpose
Once upon a time the Adelaide Cup might have been a significant event. Yet times have changed, and so have attitudes towards horse racing. Attendance has been declining for years, with fewer South Australians heading to Morphettville Racecourse to watch the event.
