I can’t stress enough the importance of sleep for Dads like me who work outdoors. It’s a struggle, let me tell you.
The long hours under the sun, braving the elements – it’s all part of the job. But what many don’t realize is the constant battle to get a good night’s sleep.
There’s a tiredness that seeps deep into your bones, one that’s not so easily shaken off. It’s not just about feeling tired; it’s about being utterly exhausted, physically and mentally.
I’ll admit, at first, I thought I could power through it. Then, one day, it hit me – I wasn’t just depriving myself of sleep; I was depriving my loved ones of the best version of me.
So, I had to make a change. A commitment to improving my sleep habits, no matter how grueling the workdays got, was what it took. Here’s what I did:
Early Bedtime:
I traded late-night TV for an early bedtime. It’s amazing what a few extra hours of sleep can do for your well-being. This is not a perfect system, some nights I want to watch a good movie and enjoy the evening.
Comfortable Mattress:
I invested in a comfortable mattress 25 years ago. After all, it’s where I spend a significant portion of my life, and it was worth every penny. Now I wish I could afford a new one. So I settle into the hollow and enjoy that I have a spot.
Bedroom Sanctuary:
I transformed my bedroom into a sleep haven. The curtains close over roll-down screens, soothing colors, and minimal distractions all played a role in creating the ideal sleep environment. Well, since we keep all our clothes in open closets, I pull the blankets over my head and close my eyes. That works.
Being a Dad-working-outdoors comes with its own set of challenges, much like marital happiness. I’m resolved to prioritize my sleep, committing to conquer these challenges one good night’s sleep at a time.
Yeah, I finally realized that sleep is NOT a luxury and IS a necessity.
It’s not just about me anymore; it’s about being there for my family – physically and mentally. They deserve my energy, my patience, and my smile.
I’m hoping to create a better future for myself and my family through this commitment, because after all, a good night’s sleep is a small price to pay for the happiness and well-being of those I love.
