Adelaide Fringe is Where?

Today saw the release of the Adelaide Fringe Guide (17 Feb – 19 March 2017)

“The Fringe is a staple diet for most South Australians … for both regular and consumers … of comedy, cabaret, theatre, music, visual arts, circus acts and digital media”
(Paraphrased from The Hon. Jack Snellings welcome message on page 2)

As I am currently based on Kangaroo Island for the foreseeable future, my first thought was if anything being shown here. Then I wondered if anything was being shown outside the Adelaide CBD?

From page 130 to 132 is the Event Index showing an alphabetical listing of the physical locations. Page 133 to 138 is all the Venues in alpha’ order.

But I don’t see what I need:

  • An alpha’ listing of all the suburbs and towns holding all the events

A cursory glance spotted Blackwood, Tanunda, Mount Gambier, Kapunda. Even the website doesn’t offer any option to seek by town!

But imagine being an overseas tourist staying at Mt Barker being handed the ‘Guide and told “There’s heaps to see, check it out!”

Firstly, they barely know where they are. They don’t know how far away the city is from them. They don’t know the name of buildings. With no simple listing of all the events in Mt Barker, they may give up and settle for beer pong with the fridge contents.

If I have to make a phone call to determine this information, I wonder if they are searching a database or the guide itself? If they are using a database, why isn’t that available via the WWW for the public to seek through? In this era of the Internet, it would not be difficult to incorporate into their website.

It’s going to be a lengthy exercise to determine if anything is held on Kangaroo Island. Feel free to comment below if you have found out yet!
