I was addicted to Cola (in each branded variety) for well over twenty years. When I was a teenager, fizzy drinks were not as accessible as they are now, it was only found at parties and events, so the taste was discovered!
Now I am more aware of the impact of carbonated drinks on the human body and the environment around us.
Every hour of the day you will find a cola can or bottle somewhere in your neighborhood. There’s probably one or two in your neighbors trash right now!
This is despite the effort to make these a refundable item.
In Australia all aluminum cans have a 10 cent return on them. This is a great way to make a few extra dollars: Right now there is a box under my desk at work that is filled to the brim with recycle bottles. Probably only enough to make a few dollars — but it matters and does make a difference.
We have a shed full of cans, bottles, milk-containers, and other glass products — because they are all worth 10 cents each. Not enough to bring in a regular income, but it certainly supplements it … and it’s non taxable! Sweet deal.
But I didn’t know it was so easy to remove Cola completely from my diet. That’s right, one day a few months ago I went cold-turkey and quit drinking cola and its variations. I actually avoid fizzy drinks in general, unless I have no alternative.
Water is my first choice of alternative. So is natural fruit juice, either as a cordial or a concentrate.
Here’s to a healthier future!
